Explore Norway
Norway has so much beyond Oslo! If you're thinking about extending your trip before or after the wedding, we've put together a few places we've loved, along with some destinations still on our own bucket list.
Places we've been and loved
Bergen
A charming waterfront city surrounded by mountains and fjords. Known for its colorful Bryggen houses, fresh seafood, cozy cafés, and incredible views from Mount Fløyen. It's one of our favorite places to wander around and soak up Norwegian charm.
Getting there from Oslo: Take the scenic Bergen Railway (about 7 hours) for beautiful mountain views, or fly in about an hour.
Flåm
A tiny village nestled between towering mountains and spectacular fjords. Famous for the Flåm Railway, one of the world's most scenic train rides, and boat trips through the beautiful Nærøyfjord. Perfect for experiencing Norway's natural beauty without needing to hike!
Getting there from Oslo: Take the Bergen Railway to Myrdal, then transfer to the famous Flåm Railway. You can also explore it as part of a Norway in a Nutshell trip.
Stavanger
Another beautiful coastal city with a picturesque old town, cute streets, and a lively harbor. It's also the gateway to the famous Preikestolen (Pulpit Rock) hike, with breathtaking views over Lysefjord. Perfect for a mix of exploring and outdoor adventure!
Getting there from Oslo: A quick flight (about an hour) or a scenic train ride (around 8 hours) along the southern part of Norway.
Lofoten Islands
One of the most spectacular places we've ever visited! Think dramatic mountains rising straight out of the ocean, turquoise beaches, charming fishing villages, and incredible hikes. In late June, you can even experience the midnight sun. If you love nature and adventure, Lofoten is a must!
Getting there from Oslo: Flying is the easiest option, typically to Bodø or Evenes, or via a connection to a smaller Lofoten airport. We recommend renting a car to explore the islands.
Places still on our bucket list
Ålesund & Geirangerfjord
Ålesund is a beautiful coastal town known for its colorful Art Nouveau architecture, surrounding islands, and panoramic views from the Aksla viewpoint. Nearby Geirangerfjord is one of Norway's most iconic fjords, famous for its towering cliffs, cascading waterfalls, and breathtaking scenery. Together, they make for an unforgettable fjord adventure!
Getting there from Oslo: Fly to Ålesund (about an hour), then continue toward Geiranger by car, bus, or seasonal ferry connections. You can also explore this region on certain summer Hurtigruten coastal voyages.
Sørlandet (Norway's Southern Coast)
Norway's sunny southern coast is known for idyllic seaside towns, white wooden houses, beautiful beaches, and relaxed summer vibes. Places like Kristiansand, Grimstad, and Risør are perfect for experiencing a classic Norwegian summer by the sea.
Getting there from Oslo: Drive south (roughly 3–4 hours to Kristiansand) or take the train (around 4.5–5 hours). A car is ideal if you want to explore multiple coastal towns.
